Super American on Superbowl Sunday

Despite my going to bed relatively early on Saturday night, I still didn´t get up until noon on Sunday. I am such a bum. Ate some toast (with peanut butter, yes!) and watched some sort of Spanish version of "Dancing with the Stars" ("¡Mira quien baila!") which was actually pretty bad, but I was way too lazy to find anything better to do with my time. Oh what a weekend, indeed. I finally showered, and by the time I was out it was lunchtime. Lunch was awesome...paella again! Yesssss. On the side we got another tomato-tuna-egg salad, and an orange for dessert. Good times. During lunch Marta asked us if we were going to watch the superbowl. We had completely forgotten! Hells yeah we were. On Friday we had made plans with a bunch of people to watch the game in la Nervión at an Irish pub called O´Neills (talk about coincidence...the Irish pub in Ann Arbor is also an O´Neills). We looked up the time...6pm eastern, which meant 12am Spain time...ah well, it´s worth it. After some more internetting we decided to go to Starbucks and get some reading done cuz we have not been to good about keeping up with our homework...even though we don´t have that much, hehe. So around 5 we walked to Starbucks/VIPS which were both PACKED. Well, I guess that they´re the places to be on a Sunday afternoon. We had some meriendas and tea and read for a good 3 hours. Not bad--I´m now 50 pages away from finishing the novel. Then we walked home in time for dinner, which again was so delicious. It was that collared greens dish she had served weeks earlier that we loved (minus the garbanzo beans) with a side of super-garlicy shrimp. ¡Me gusta mucho! After dinner we got ready and were out the door by 11 to meet up with Katie and Melissa to walk to la Nervión. Halfway there we realized that we had left the space heater on in our room, so Stacey tapped into her inner athlete and sprinted back to the apartment to unplug it. You know, since we´ve been here, Stacey and I have had issues with meeting people places on time. We were so proud of ourselves this time because we had left early and were going to actually really be on time! That was until we remembered the space heater...I swear, God does not want us to be on time anywhere in Spain. Anyhoo, we met up with them around 11:30 and decided to take the 35 minute walk to la Nervión, which actually turned out not to be so bad. I had been so lazy all weekend that it felt nice to be up and walking again. We got to O´Neills right at midnight, in time to order some Guinness (yesss!) and get a good spot. The majority of people from our program were there, and aside from that, the bar was filled with Americans and some Canadians. The bartender and waitress were both Irish, woohoo! Love it. The Guinness was great, haven´t had one of those in ages, I forgot that I liked them...oh man, I´m such a man sometimes...or maybe just wannabe Irish...who knows. I didn´t really know who to root for, so I arbitrarily chose the Steelers since a couple of people in my program go to UPenn, and it´s closer to Michigan. So yeah. The majority of people at the bar seemed to be rooting for the Seahawks. It was a good time. During the game we got free popcorn, and at halftime free hot dogs! It´s the full American experience. Oh, and Cirque du Soleil is in Sevilla right now, and a lot of beefy guys wearing Cirque du Soleil jackets were at the bar...I wonder if they were performers. I doubt it, I bet that they were crew members; but nevertheless that was pretty exciting for me. It was a really fun night, yet very American (obviously). I definitely did not feel like I was in Spain anymore! We had a really great time, even though we ended up leaving after halftime (I mean, halftime ended at 2:30am!). We walked all the way back, which felt good to walk off two beers and a hot dog, and were in bed by 3. It was an awesome night, it felt good to tap into our Americanism completely. Everyone there was into it, rooting, cheering, the whole shabang. Found out today that the Steelers won, woo woo!
